René Gabriel: The “Swiss Wine Pope.” Founder of Weinwisser, and considered the most influential wine critic in German-speaking Europe

René Gabriel, the rather well-known Swiss wine critic and writer, is considered the most influential wine critic in Germany. Or as Bordoverview – to which he contributes notes – put it, the “Swiss Wine Pope”. He founded the influential wine magazine, Weinwisser, for which he writes along with other wine publications such as Falstaff. He also maintains his own website.

Gabriel’s Weinwisser

He was for fifteen years the wine buyer for famous Swiss wine group Mövenpick for which he now consults along with others, is a partner in the well-known auction house Weinbörse, and his various reference books such as Bordeaux Total contain tens of thousands of tasting notes going back decades.

His near-perfect review (in a post also looking at the Bordeaux 2010 vintage) of our La Peira 2007 is below, and we hope it inspires those who haven’t to look at wines! (From Rene Gabriel’s Blog )

2007 LA PÈIRA EN DAMAISÈLA : VIVE LA FRANCE DU SUD

Aufgepasst.

Listen up. Here comes a new name, from the Terrasses du Larzac,  that you should remember absolutely!!!

This spectacular South of France wine comes with a lot of Syrah (90%) and little Grenache (logically about 10%), and impressed me from the first second. Logically no lightweight, but the grumpy thing keeps its balance and shows lavish wealth and delicate finesse. Licorice, cassis, black cherries, dried apricots and minty freshness characterize this new grand aromatic Southern French-Must!  19/20 drink – 2020
Tasted at Alten Löwen (Old Lions) in Zürich. Whose hosts, the young couple Mary and Reto Burri-Lutz, have given this formerly run-down, noisy space an incredible amount of momentum. …This is also must!

In the process (as yet) where to find La Peira. Franz Wermuth is said to have a few bottles.

We’re grateful to René Gabriel for looking at our young lions from the Terrasses du Larzac when dining at Alten Löwen, given there were so many obvious appellations and wines to choose from. There’s a pride (of the same) from this appellation.

If nothing else,  Alten Löwen is an address to explore in Zürich. An image from the same follows:
