2018 vintage reviews

The following Jeb Dunnuck 2018 vintage reviews of La Pèira came out in the middle of 2021.

Spring frosts had seen between 50% to 100% of crop losses on the La Pèira vineyards. And world was still processing recent upheavals.

For us it was a bit of a mystery how the wines had been received. We were amazed and greatly encouraged to see the 2018 reviews at a point where there seemed to very few or no grapes to be harvested that year. And very grateful to see they have been looked at at a time where it seemed the world had stopped turning and not much seemed clear.

In fact, so surprised it seems we failed to post these excellent reviews which we are pleased to do now (on noticing our error).

La Pèira 2018

“…La Peira is another rich, sexy wine from this team that ranks with the top wines from the region. ”

The 2018 Terrasses du Larzac La Peira is another rich, sexy wine from this team that ranks with the top wines from the region. Ample blackcurrants, blackberries, chocolate, and tapenade notes all define the nose, and it’s medium to full-bodied and has a juicy, rounded mouthfeel, nicely integrated acidity, and a great finish. It shows the more fruit-forward, ripe, sexy style of the vintage and should continue drinking nicely for at least another 7-8 years. 94/100

Las Flors de la Pèira 2018

“…offers a rock star nose of kirsch and black raspberry fruits as well as herbes de Provence, ground pepper, dried flowers, and sweet baking spices”

Released as a Vin de France, the 2018 Las Flors is a more Grenache-dominated wine compared to the more Syrah-heavy La Peira. This deep ruby/plum-hued 2018 offers a rock star nose of kirsch and black raspberry fruits as well as herbes de Provence, ground pepper, dried flowers, and sweet baking spices. Rich, full-bodied, beautifully textured, and just as seamless as they come, it has a more forward, front end -loaded style that’s ideal for enjoying over the coming 7-8 years. 94/100

Matissat 2018

“I’d put it up against anything from the South of France in 2018”

Utterly brilliant, and my favorite 2018 from this remarkable estate in the Languedoc, the 2018 Les Terrasses Du Larzac Matissat (Mourvèdre) reveals a ruby, almost opaque hue to go with a magical perfume of black raspberries, charcuterie, dried spice, bouquet garni, and flowery incense. Rich and medium to full-bodied, this beauty offers silky tannins, no hard edges, and a great finish, and I’d put it up against anything from the South of France in 2018. It needs air to show at its best and is going to evolve for 10-15 years, although there’s no need to delay gratification, as it shows the up-front, charming style of the vintage beautifully. 96/100
